I
can't promise I'll be good
No one has taught me how to act
or behave as a parrot "should".
My first owner didn't treat me right
He said that I was "bad"
He never forgave me that first bite
After that, he was always mad.
He shoved me back into my cage
And so I started to scream
Then he hit me in a rage
And my life became a bad dream.
So now I scream and yes, I bite
I'm angry and misunderstood
But please, take me home with you
Love me and I'll be good.
Please let me come home with you
And spend some time with me
I can be sweet again I know
Take me home, you'll see.
My next owner swore at me
I learned to say things back
So now my words are crude and rude
Please cut me some slack.
If you let me come home with you
I'll learn some nicer speech
If you are kind and give me time
I'll change my vulgar screech.
My next owner just HAD to have me
She thought I was "way cool"
But now she doesn't have time for me
She's busy with boys and school.
That's when I began to pluck
I'm not pretty anymore
I won't be much of an ornament
if that's what you're looking for.
I may never grow new feathers
My chest may always be bare
But my soul I know could heal itself
if only someone would care.
My last owner died and left me
She said that she'd made plans
But she never followed through on them
and I've fallen into bad hands.
Please overlook my failings
Please end this pain and strife
Please, please take me home with you
I'll be your friend for life.
Please take me home and treat me right
and let our friendship grow
Please let me come home with you
This time it will work, I know.

Welcome to Feathered Kisses Aviary, Sanctuary & Rescue. We run a private rescue and sanctuary for exotic hookbills out of our home in Southeastern NY. We are NOT a non-profit organization at this time. That does not mean we make a profit...far be it. It is just that the approximately $2,500.00 in legal fees it would take for the IRS to see us as a 501(c)3 could be put to so much better use buying healthy fresh food, pellets and paying for medical care for our birds. UPDATE: Thank you Mr.P for graciously offering to fill out and file the necessary documents to make us an official Non-Profit!
We were chugging along doing alright paying the bills for the birds with the sale of an occassional baby from the few breeder birds we keep (parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels)some months it even paid for the feed! But I am slowly falling apart at the old age of 45. I have degenerative disk disease and in March of 2007 I became unable to work, and with that came the loss of one income in a 2 income family and lots of beaks to feed. I underwent a spinal fusion in June of 2007 and things aren't going well. So while we wait to see what happens with Social Security Disability (all prayers are gratefully accepted)we do what we can to get by.
(UPDATE IN MARCH 2008 MY SSD WAS APPROVED ON THE FIRST GO ROUND. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND SUPPORT!)
We offer in home grooming, behavior and nutritional counseling all 3 for one price. We also offer phone consultations free of charge. Lost a bird? We will do what we can to help you recover it, we will keep tabs on message boards and e-mail lists and post to those.
Late in the Summer, early fall we had a large tent sale to benefit the birds. We had finally gotten the large outdoor aviary up for the 5 Macaws and 2 Amazons up so...we thought it was a good a time as any to let people know we were here, and what we could offer. We didn't sell alot at the yard sale, but folks were very generous is handing folded up bills "for the birds". About the 2nd day in, a reporter for the paper showed up. (You'll find the link to the story in my blog). Well, the trickle of birds sometimes becomes a flood. We seem to scrape by but summer is over and the garden is spent and we could use some help.UPDATE 6/08 Our second flight is up (what a difference a year makes) and the birds are in their summer homes. We do love visitors so do come for a visit.
If you feel so moved, click the donate button. This will take you to Paypal where you can give what you can. If you need a little convincing...look at the slide show of some of our permanant residents. We use these birds in our education program. We also invite folks to come visit and meet the birds. Those people in the photos are happy visitors, many who are holding a bird for the very first time. Just so there is no confusion, we are not yet a non-profit. You gift is NOT Tax deductible.
We are trying to raise funds for an addition for the birds. It is being built with their needs in mind. 2 big sliding glass doors on opposite ends, lots of light and a big sink for "Mom" to clean up the mess. And we always can use some help with the feed bill. We buy pellets 3 to 500 pounds at a time (we do sell DR D's diet here at the rescue) at a time and we go through about 65 pounds of fresh and frozen produce a week, so...we appreciate the help.
Thank you for giving...it is we the human who turned these birds into what we get here at the rescue. Please read the poem "Rescue Me". I've read it 100 times and it still makes me cry. It is why I do what I do.
